Kisumu County Assembly moves to reclaim riparian land
Kisumu County Assembly on Thursday unanimously voted to have the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999 enforced to reclaim riparian land in the lake side city.
Shauri Moyo/Kaloleni Ward MCA Prisca Misachi who was behind the motion claims that most of the riparian land in Kisumu has been grabbed and houses built on the wetlands thus affecting the ecosystem.
Speaking while tabling the motion, Misachi said the Act stipulates environmental management and conservation in the country and must be enforced to protect the environment.
The Assembly Majority Leader Kenneth Onyango, while contributing to the motion says the department of environment in the county must enforce the Act.
Onyango said Kisumu County must reclaim riparian land that has been grabbed by investors saying such investments must be brought down since they were put up in contravention of the Act.
