Kisumu DG faces eviction from posh Milimani house

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili is facing imminent eviction from his house in Milimani Estate over an alleged Ksh. 3.5million in rent arrears.

The house is reportedly owned by United Millers and was also home to former Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma.

A letter seen by Citizen Digital from Vauxhull Holdings Limited, managers of the house, said they have terminated the tenancy agreement with the county over the huge amount in arrears.

“We refer to our above captioned tenancy agreement expiring on September, 30, 2019 as per our record. We refer to the clause 3.1 (b) of the Agreement and hereby give notice of two calendar months and inform you in advance that as landlord it is unable to renew our agreement for any further period upon expiry of the above mentioned tenancy agreement,” the letter reads.

According to the property managers, the county officials owe them Ksh. 273, 844 that was incurred by Owili and Ksh. 3,233,250 by Ranguma.

The letter to the county on July 25, 2019 demanding that the arrears to be paid, warning that the tenancy agreement would not be renewed after September if the debt remains uncleared.

The property managers further accused the head of Finance for County Executive Committee Nerry Achar of failing to honor his promises of settling the debt.

Four years ago, there was disquiet when the then Kisumu Governor Ranguma stayed at a hotel while renovations were reportedly ongoing at his official residence.

There were concerns that the amount of money the county was spending on hotel accommodation for the governor was unsustainable.

It later emerged that Ksh. 20,910,169 had been paid for his stay at hotel for several months yet the county also paid Ksh. 540,000 during the same period as rent for the official residence which he later moved in to.

The Daily Nation quoted the Auditor General report that said: “With effect from July 9, 2013, the governor moved into a rented premises where the county government paid a monthly rent of Sh250,000.”
