Kisumu Girls students charged with property damage, disturbance

Seven students of Kisumu Girls High School were on Monday arraigned in court to answer for charges of causing disturbance and malicious destruction of property at the institution earlier this month.

Appearing before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Julius Ng’arng’ar the seven girls pleaded not guilty to the charges.

They were accused of jointly cooperating with other students to unlawfully damage 103 windows, 16 doors, 36 fire extinguishers and a perimeter fence at the school all totaling to Kshs 2.9 Million in damages.

The students were also accused of damaging the rear window of a saloon car belonging to the school principal Ms. Margaret Mamai.

The court heard that the students; majority of whom are minors except for one, also caused disturbance by shouting and pelting the school buildings with stones.

The magistrate released the seven on bond.

“Having considered that most of them are minors, each of them is granted a bond of Ksh.50,000 with one surety of similar sum and the alternative cash bails of Ksh.30,000,” said Jusice Ng’arng’ar.

The magistrate also ordered for an assessment of their ages before the matter comes up for hearing on August 7, 2018.
