Kisumu: Woman arrested with 950 mosquito nets meant for free distribution

Police in Kisumu are holding a 63-year-old woman after a total of 950 treated mosquito nets were found in her house in USAID estate in Kisumu.

Police believe the nets which are part of those given freely to Kenya by the Global Fund for free distribution to fight malaria, were stolen from Rabuor and Nyangande hospitals.

County police commander Samuel Anampiu says police officers from Obunga police post acting on a tip off raided the house where they found 19 bales of the nets.

He says each bale contains 50 pieces of the nets and each goes at Ksh.400 totaling to Ksh.380,000.

He says they believe the nets are part of the 17,000 nets stolen from the two hospitals in Nyando Sub-County.

He says the suspect, Mary Awino Ohala, who is the owner of the house where the nets were found is being held for questioning and will be charged in court.

Early this month, police arrested three individuals suspected to be behind the theft of the 17,000 mosquito bed nets in Nyangande and Rabuor hospitals.

Those arrested were Theresa Anyango Otieno, the acting in charge at Rabuor sub-county hospital, Cynthia Akinyi the acting officer in charge of net distribution at Nyang’ande area and one David Ouma the in-charge at Nyang’ande hospital.

There have been several complaints from hundreds of locals in Kisumu who have missed out on the nets meant to cushion them from malaria transmitting mosquitoes.
