Kitui fire engine driver to undergo mental examination

A Kitui judge on Wednesday ordered that the driver who ran over Ex-Kitui mayor Martha Mwangangi during protests by traders against the Kitui County Government be examined to find out if he is mentally stable.

This comes after a state counsel in the case, Margaret Maeiru, requested the court to allow the accused to undergo a mental examination to determine if he is mentally fit.

The accused, Philip Isika Tito, will remain in police custody until the 12th of January next year waiting to be arraigned in court to take plea on the case.

Former Kitui Mayor Martha Mwangangi was on Friday 16^th December 2016 crushed to death by a fire engine during a protest by Kalundu Market traders in Kitui Town.

Martha Mwangangi, who was leading the protest after stalls belonging to Kalundu Market traders were allegedly brought down by County Government of Kitui officers, died on the spot outside Kitui Central Police Station when the driver of the fire engine plowed into a crowd of protestors.

Former Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Charity Ngilu, who had accompanied the late Mwangangi to sympathise with the traders escaped unharmed in the protests.

Ngilu escaped being hit by the fire engine by inches after she was shoved aside by her bodyguard.

The driver sped away after the incident, possibly to escape lynching by the rowdy crowd.

He was, however, later arrested at Kitui Ginnery and taken to Kitui Central Police Station.
