Kiunjuri takes issue with Raila ‘rungus’ remarks

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri on Friday warned politicians against making statements that would incite Kenyans to violence in response to controversial comments uttered by Cord leader Raila Odinga to the Maasai community.

The Devolution CS took issue with a recent statement issued by Mr Odinga that many have claimed was meant to incite the Maasai to evict IEBC commissioners by force.

“It is unfortunate that leaders would result to issue such statements at this time the country is approaching general elections,” said Mr Kiunjuri.

However, the Opposition leader has refuted claims that he asked the Maasai to head to the electoral offices armed with ‘rungus’ [clubs], pointing out that the weapons are a part of the community’s traditional garb.

Speaking at Siron Village in Laikipia County during the funeral service of an MCA’s sibling, Mr Kiunjuri said that it was duty of every leader to be cautious while addressing the public to avoid making inflammatory statements that would incite Kenyans to violence.

Responding to the incitement allegations, Mr Odinga called upon the government to ensure a new IEBC team is in office by 2017

The opposition chief further accused some leaders of using the divide and rule tactic to divide the country.
