KMPDU boss Chibanzi Mwachonda tests positive for COVID-19

Dr. Chibanzi Mwachonda, the acting Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement released on Friday, Dr. Mwachonda said he contracted the virus while dispensing his official duties.

“I’m currently in a stable condition and under self-isolation. My family is safe, contact tracing and testing of all close contacts is ongoing,” he said.

According to the KMPDU leader, coronavirus is in the widespread community transmission phase and all Kenyans are at risk but that should not be a cause for fear or stigma to affected individuals or their families.

He averred that the high number of recoveries offers hope that Kenya will win the war against an invisible enemy.

The medic cautioned that Kenyans should adhere to the Ministry of Health prevention measures: putting on masks, washing hands, avoiding unnecessary movement and gatherings in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and enable flattening of the curve.

He also urged the government to support frontline workers by providing adequate and quality PPEs as well as a welfare package on work injury benefits and comprehensive medical treatment.

“To my colleagues on the frontline, we soldier on in the service to humanity cognizant of the great risk of infection to all of us,” Dr. Mwachonda added.
