KNH Board appoints Dr. Thomas Mutie as acting CEO

The Kenyatta National Hospital’s board of directors has appointed Dr. Thomas Mutie as acting Chief Executive Officer to replace CEO Lily Koros who has been sent on compulsory leave.

Dr Peter Masinde has also been appointed acting director of clinical services after Dr John Ong’ech declined the role.

Dr. Ong’ech who says declined the position over personal reasons had been named to the position on Friday, March 2.

The appointments follows a sitting by the board  on Saturday February 3 as had been directed by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicilly Kariuki.

Koros’s exit follows a controversial patient mix up that has rocked the country’s largest referral hospital eliciting mixed reactions countrywide.

The facility hit the headlines after it emerged that a neurosurgeon at the facility performed a brain surgery on the wrong patient.

Reports indicate that a mix-up of tags occurred on two patients; one who was to undergo surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain and another who only required nursing and treatment for a swelling in his head.

Hours into the surgery, the doctors apparently failed to find the blood clot and it was then that they realized they had cut open the skull of the wrong man.
