KNH maintains rape allegations are false

Under fire Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Lily Koros on Friday maintained that allegations of sexual assault on mothers by morgue attendants at the facility are false.

Ms. Koros, who was before the Parliamentary Committee on Health was put to task to explain the state of the hospital’s investigations into the matter.

This comes after claims of rape at the hospital emerged on Saturday, January 20 on social media which resulted to intense backlash from the public.

A section of victims took to social media, detailing how morgue attendants harass them sexually whenever they meet on the corridors or the lifts en-route to the new born unit situated on the hospital’s second floor.

The chief executive told the committee that since she took over the reins at the hospital, the management has never received any complaints of sexual harassment from its patients.

“The social media reports on a mother with twins who was allegedly assaulted was very misleading. We did not have a mother with twins on third floor as per the social media report,” said Ms. Koros.

The beleaguered CEO however said that the hospital’s management is taking the allegations seriously and is putting in place necessary measures to secure the patients.

“In the view off the seriousness of the allegations, the board of management met, toured the areas in question and interacted with the patients and assured them of their safety,” said Ms. Koros.

She further listed measures the hospital’s management has put in place to secure the patients.

They include; improving the lighting at the hospital, procurement of modern body carrying trolleys, fast tracking the purchase of CCTV cameras to boost security as well as increasing the number of operational digital communication sets.

Similarly, the hospital has also reviewed its body collection hours from 2am to 3am to 4.30am while at the same time creating security awareness among its patients.
