KNUT issues fresh threats in salary increment push

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a series of threats as they surge forward with their push for the 50 to 60 per cent salary increment for teachers.

Speaking during the National Delegates Conference on Wednesday, the union threatened to start a process of removing top Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officials if the increment awarded to them by the Employment and Labour Relations Court in June is not effected in two weeks.

KNUT further demanded that job evaluation for teachers should be carried out by TSC and not the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) as is currently the case.

They claimed that TSC had doubled its staff salaries with no consideration for teachers.

“Collective Bargaining Agreement must first be signed before Christmas or else TSC officials will not be in office by January,” said KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education of Teachers (Kuppet) announced that it will go to the Supreme Court to block SRC from determining teachers’ salaries if the increment is not effected.

Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori stated that TSC should comply with the lower court’s ruling and increase teachers’ salaries to end the protracted court battles that have stretched for months.

The new demands may impede the on-going negotiation between the teachers unions and TSC in a bid to end the decade-long wrangles over salary increment.

Last month, President Kenyatta ordered TSC to pay teachers who had been involved in strike their September salary and urged the unions to engage the commission in negotiations to find an amicable solution to the issues.

TSC announced this week that it had finally settled teachers’ September salary in what has been seen as a positive step in finding solutions to outstanding issues.

The NDC was attended by over 2,000 teachers’ representatives from across the country who sought to evaluate the progress made by teachers this year.
