KNUT, KUPPET threaten to withdraw teachers from Kapedo over insecurity

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) as well as the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have now threatened to withdraw their members from Kapedo and Baringo areas over insecurity.

This as tension remains high in Kapedo following days of bandit attacks and counter operations to flush out armed gangs in the border area of Baringo and Turkana counties.

Ten people have already died in one week with hundreds of families forced to flee their homes fearing for their lives.

Security forces and bandits have clashed since early last week when an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was burnt by gunmen in an ambush in Kasarani area of Turkana County.

Teachers’ unions have threatened to withdraw their members from the county and have issued an ultimatum to government to restore calm in the area within seven days.

Locals have also raised the alarm on lack of supplies due to restrictions imposed to effect the security operation going on in the area.

“I’m asking teachers wherever they are, if you feel your life is in danger, very quickly collect your luggage and come to the director’s office as soon as possible,” said KNUT Baringo branch Secretary Joshua Cheptarus.

“We’re giving the government just 7 days, if they don’t do security work in Kapedo, then we shall ask all our teachers to withdraw…and we shall ask TSC, just like we did in North Eastern, to withdraw all the teachers in Baringo, Kapedo and environs so that we don’t lose teachers because of insecurity that should otherwise be provided by the government of Kenya,” reiterated KUPPET National Chairman Omboko Milemba.
