KNUT officials raise red flag over teachers health insurance

Kenya National Union of teachers, Embu branch has called for immediate withdrawal from AON’s insurance package.

Speaking to press in Embu, KNUT Embu County Chairman Josephat Kathome said that AON, which was contracted by Teachers service commission (TSC), has failed in its mandate.

Kathome said teachers in the area are not getting healthcare services from the contracted service provider, yet money is being deducted from their salaries and remitted to AON.

The KNUT boss went on explain that the money remitted to AON was meant to be disbursed to local facilities – hospitals where teachers are supposed to access free healthcare, but this was not happening.

Specifically, the KNUT county Chairman said that TENRI Hospital and the Embu County Hospital have refused to treat teachers.

According to Kathome, the two hospitals said they cannot serve teachers as they have not been paid by AON, adding that the company owes them almost Ksh.20 million.

He asked KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion to call for mass action to compel TSC to cancel the contract and look for an alternative insurance company as teachers were suffering.

KNUT Embu County Executive Secretary DN Murunguma said teachers are forced to dig into their pockets to get assistance from private hospitals, adding that this costs them not less that Ksh3000 per visit.

Murunguma said AON was giving certain quotas preferential treatment, adding that the company provided great medical care to parliamentarians while teachers were left to fend for themselves.
