KNUTs issues fresh ultimatum to government

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has given the government a two week ultimatum to ensure that it pays teachers a 50%-60% salary increase.

KNUT Chairman Mudzi Nzili said that if the government fails to do so by February 27th, teachers across the country will down their tools.

Nzili further asked teachers across the country not to sign performance contracts with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) saying the union was not consulted.

He added that the terms of engagement must be clear and the union must be involved because they have a negotiation machinery in place.

The KNUT Chairman was speaking after Kakamega branch KNUT annual elections in Kakamega town.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion said despite both Treasury and Education Cabinet Secretaries having positively supported and structured the dialogue to move the dispute towards a resolution on salary increment and the signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been largely negative and difficult by taking the union round in circles.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had issued a directive to TSC and teachers unions, KNUT and KUPPET, to set measures in resolving the dispute on salaries.

During the National Delegates Conference on 8th to 9th December, the union had threatened to start a process of removing top TSC officials if the increment awarded to them by the Employment and Labour Relations Court in June was not effected.
