An inmate at Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu was on Wednesday hacked to death using a hoe (Jembe) by his fellow prisoner after a squabble.

Kisumu West OCPD Meshack Kiptum said the suspect, 25-year-old Peter Onyango Otieno, had a disagreement with the deceased at a farm where they had been deployed for community work.

According to the OCPD, Onyango used the jembe he was working with to repeatedly hit the deceased on the head and shoulder.

The deceased, who was identified as Leonard Momanyi Gekonga, was serving a five year sentence for manslaughter.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Mr. Kiptum said attempts by prison warders to save Momanyi’s life were futile as he succumbed to injuries at the Kodiaga prison health facility where he was rushed.

The OCPD said the suspect, who was serving a three-year sentence for an offence of abduction, will now be charged afresh with murder.

The body of the deceased was moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as further investigations into the incident continue.
