Koreas Kim Jong watches submarine launch ballistic missile test

North Korea’s state-run television KRT aired video on Friday (January 8) showing the state’s leader Kim Jong Un watching an underwater test fire of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

The footage, which was part of a new documentary containing Kim’s activities in December 2015, showed Kim on a boat watching a missile being fired from underwater.

The video cannot independently verified and the state media did not specify a date or location of the test.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported last month that North Korea conducted the SLBM test in December, but the test seemed to have failed, quoting an unnamed military official.

The test, if confirmed, follows a test-launch in May of the SLBM, which Pyongyang boasted as a success but has not been independently verified, either.

Tensions are high on Korean peninsula as Seoul decided to resume its propaganda broadcasts against Pyongyang on Friday after North Korea this week announced that it had successfully tested a hydrogen nuclear device.
