KPLC tokens crisis raises eyebrows in Parliament

Members of Parliament have expressed their disappointment after officials from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) failed to appear and explain the tokens crisis.

They had been summoned by the Public Investment Committee after the token generation system went offline for three days.

According to the committe chairman Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, their presence would have helped unravel the controversy surrounding paid electricity tokens.

“We cannot just sit back and people are minting millions at the expense of ordinary Kenyans,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Power company indicated that the token generation system would be unavailable until 6am on Friday, April 27, to allow for maintenance.

Customers were further urged to buy the KPLC tokens in advance using Paybill 800904 or through the PAWA App to avoid inconvenience.

Thousands of Kenyans were left without electricity last week after the system went offline for three days. They were forced to physically queue at KPLC offices for several hours to get reconnected.
