KRA Customs boss Kevin Safari wants DPP to probe DCI decision to charge him

KRA Customs boss Kevin Safari wants DPP to probe DCI decision to charge him

Kevin Safari Lewis, who was to be charged alongside KPA boss Daniel Manduku, has criticized a recommendation to have him charged for otherwise doing his job as the law requires.

Safari, the KRA Commissioner of Customs and Border Control, is fighting the decision that was made by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“That it is now strange and shocking to learn that I am under the imminent threat of facing allegation of procedural gazettement of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Peripheral Storage Facilities (PSF),” his letter reads.

Safari wrote a letter to the DPP seeking to have his prosecution stopped and the DPP reassess and investigate the matter.

He insists that his decisions and actions were all legal and motivated by national concern and public interest which ensured ease of business amongst SST’s, increased revenue collection by the KRA and proper utilization of the Standard Gauge Railway.

In the letter, Safari further avers that KRA has not experienced any loss of revenue in view of the newly-opened Peripheral Storage Facilities.

He is adamant that KRA instead managed to solve the previously predominant challenge amongst the small scale traders in Nyamakima, Gikomba and Kamukunji.

“The thought that I presently face imminent threat to my employment and reputation yet I have demonstrated unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of public interest is at least unfortunate,” he adds.

According to the letter, after recommendation from the offices of Customs & Border control Department (C&BC), KRA visited and inspected three facilities and gave a clean bill of health to Mitchell Cotts Peripheral Storage Facility (PSF); Nairobi Inland Cargo Terminal peripheral Storage.

Earlier in the week, Safari had appeared in court alongside Manduku but failed to take plea after the court was told that the Director of Public Prosecution recalled the file for review.
