KRA de-registers 121 vehicles, including CS Wamalwa’s

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has de-registered motor vehicle registration numbers of 121 vehicles which were obtained fraudulently, including one belonging to Water Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa.

This comes after the KRA and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stepped up the search for the cars believed to have been illegally imported and registered in May 2016.

KRA has said that CS Wamalwa owes the authority 6.5 million shillings in unpaid duty for his Range Rover Vogue motor vehicle.

The KRA had in May presented before High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola documents showing the CS owes the taxman the unpaid duty.

Wamalwa is said to have been the second owner of the vehicle which he purchased from a Grace Wambui.

Wambui, and 10 others, had filed a petition at the High Court accusing the taxman of not giving them adequate time to comply with a directive to present their vehicles for inspection.

In May, KRA’s commissioner for Investigation and Enforcement, Githii Mburu and his team, were at the Railway Club in Nairobi where owners were required to present their vehicles together with the original ownership, transfer and importation documents.

The Kenya Revenue Authority had posted a public notice to alert vehicle owners of the ongoing verification.

The registered owners of the listed vehicles were then asked to take notice of Section 204 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004.

The authority has been cracking the whip on tax evaders.
