KRA demands Ksh443m tax arrears from city lawyer

The Kenya Revenue Authority is demanding over Ksh443 million as tax from a city lawyer, Professor Tom Ojienda.

The tax collector in a letter dated June 7th 2016 demanded the payment of the money for the period 2009-2016.

However, the Judicial Service Commissioner has obtained an order prohibiting KRA from demanding the amount pending determination of Ojienda’s suit contesting the tax assessment.

The lawyer has also obtained orders stopping his prosecution over any illegal entries in the tax leger or any claim until the matter is determined.

Ojienda has accused the tax man of subjecting his four bank accounts, three held at Barclays and one at Standard Chartered Bank, to taxation and violation of his fundamental right and fair administration action.

He claims that the move is purely political, malicious, vindictive and calculated to embarrass him.

The case will be heard on the 19th December 2016
