KRA official on the run after police discover Ksh.10M uncustomed cigarettes

Police are searching for an officer from the Kenya Revenue Authority linked to uncustomed cigarettes worth Ksh.10 million.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the official fled with an officer from the Administration Police Service.

“Further investigations are ongoing including search for KRA official and APS Kenya officer believed to have been escorting the lorry and escaped after they were intercepted by DCI detectives,” a tweet from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations reads.

The identity of the two is yet to be revealed even as two other suspects were arrested in Uasin Gishu.

Moses Waweru and Josephat Kamau were arraigned in court on Monday after they were found with the Supermarch cigarettes labeled ‘For Export’.

The cigarettes were found hidden inside a compartment of a Mitsubishi Lorry.

DCI detectives established that the cigarettes did not have requisite KRA stamps.

Last month, KRAheightened the war against illicit trade by destroying contraband worth Ksh.1.5 billion.

The exercise which took place at Stony Athi, Kajiado County saw over three hundred bottles of alcoholic drinks, fake excise stamps and cigarettes destroyed.

The products were seized from traders in Nairobi with the taxman fearing over Ksh.400 million could have been lost in tax revenues.

And in September last year, former Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) boss Charles Ongwae was arrested over allegations of allowing contraband and contaminated goods into the country.

He was arrested alongside 32 top KRA and  KeBS officials.
