KRA, police destroy ethanol worth Ksh 7M in Murang’a

Police in Murang’a, together with officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority, have destroyed 7,500 liters of ethanol following a court order.

The chemical worth Ksh 7 million was intercepted while in transit on Kenol-Sagana road two years ago.

In 2015, Flying Squad officers seized the ethanol, for which duty had not been paid, while on transit to Nanyuki.

Two people were arrested and charged with moving unaccustomed goods.

Murang’a South Deputy County Commissioner, Titus Macharia, who oversaw destruction of the chemical, says it was meant to manufacture second generation brews.

With the help of inmates from Murang’a prisons, the ethanol stocked in thirty 250-litre plastic drums, was emptied in a sewer at Karie area near Murang’a town.

Officers from the National Environment Management Authority also supervised the exercise to ensure the chemical did not pose a risk to the environment.

Two years ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive for the destruction of second generation brews citing its adverse effects on young people.

The President’s directive saw more than two million litres of the killer brews destroyed in Murang’a County within two months.
