KRA staff claim phones tapped, transfers unreasonable

A section of employees at the Kenya Revenue Authority have accused investigators and their employer of intimidation.

An 8-page memo seen by Citizen Digital revealed concern from staff over the recent arrests linked to alleged corruption at KRA.

In the letter addressed to the Board chairman Amb. Francis Muthaura, they said:

“A good majority of us have been with the authority for at least a decade now and in this time we have witnessed its steady decline from employer of choice to an environment of extreme distress for employees.”

‘SECURITY THREAT’

They claim that they cannot air their grievances as their right to private communication has been withdrawn allegedly through unauthorised tapping of calls and other communication channels.

Communication between staff has also been reportedly limited and they apparently are not allowed to carry any food into the office as it ‘poses a security threat’.

The memo dated may 21, 2019 further termed work transfers as ‘haphazardly’ done

“Often it is done in a disruptive and unreasonable manner without due regard to the length of stay at a station away from one’s family, frequency of transfers, medical issues, succession planning, fairness and gender balance,” the memo reads.

The staff further alleges that there is disjointed leadership in the company.

This they say has resulted in lack of cohesion from the top and led to misunderstanding down to the junior staff and ultimately confusion in the entire organization.

‘Poor’ working environment

The KRA staff also claimed that the company is understaffed as the graduate training program was allegedly eliminated.

They say that their office lack proper equipment and that in some regions, they are forced to use their own personal computers or contribute money to buy their own equipment.

This despite some of them taking home as little as Ksh.5,000 after taxation.

They allege that 2009 was the last time their salaries were increased despite the high cost of living and inflation.
