Ksh.18B needed for roads destroyed by floods

By ROBERT MASAI

The Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development says it needs at least Ksh.18 billion to repair roads that have been affected by heavy rains and floods.

Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says the money is required for immediate repairs of the roads across the country.

“Now that the rains have subsided, we are going round to asses the roads so that we avoid inconveniencing transport across the county,” he said.

To maintain the tattered Nairobi roads, the CS says the cost of repairs will top Ksh.4.1 billion.

“For the case of Nairobi, we are focusing on CBD and Industrial Area and that will be at a total cost of Ksh.4.1 billion,” he says.

“As we are talking, the work in Nairobi has started and more work is expected to continue.”

Mr Macharia hinted that the government might just work on all the roads in the Capital City including those under the county jurisdiction.

“We shall discuss which road belong to which government once we have completed all roads,” he said.

The CS was addressing the media after the launch of the construction of the Kandisi bridge in Kajiado County. He promised that work on the Kajiado road will begin soon.

“We have negotiate to make sure the contractor starts the work of dual carriage on the Kajiado Road from Bomas,” he said.

Mr Macharia warned constructors against shoddy work.

“We are trying to do all we can to ensure if constructors do shoddy work, they are held accountable,” he said.
