Ksh.230M spent to fight locusts, Ksh.300M more allocated as swarms spread to 26 counties

The government has so far spent Ksh.23o million to fight the locust invasion that has hit various parts of the country.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya said the government intends to spend a further Ksh.300 million in locust control, an exercise projected to go on until June this year.

This coming at a time of heightened concern on locust-control measures employed by the government to mitigate the locusts which have so far been reported in 26 counties.

The heavily affected areas include Marsabit, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Garissa.

The Agriculture CS is Wednesday expected to flag off three additional planes aimed at stepping up aerial spraying programme in locust infested counties.

As at January this year when Munya announced the Ksh.230 million allocation, the locust invasion had hit about eight counties.
