Ksh 400K Compensation? Get Serious, Murkomen Tells Govt

This is after the government offered a Ksh 400,000 compesation to the evictees, which, according to Murkomen, are pea nuts.

The outspoken Jubilee Alliance Senator said that the compensation is more of an insult to the people of Embobut.

“The government should adequately compensate the affected persons. This amount is like a bad joke,” said the Senator.

Murkomen, who was speaking at a colloquium organized by the World Bank and the Ministry of Water, Environment and Natural Resources in Eldoret, faulted the government for failing to consult widely with the residents.

The forum, that brought together stakeholders in the environment sector, was aimed at chanting the way forward on issues regarding forest management and how to achieve 10% forest cover by 2030.

SUSTAINABLE FORESTS MANAGEMENT

The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator said that forests should be protected and people living there should equally benefit after being evicted.

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago, who was also attending the forum, cautioned illegal loggers that the law would catch up with them.

The Cabinet Secretary in charge of Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources Prof Judy Wakhungu said that human survival is pegged on sustainable use and management of forest and other natural resources.

She added that forests are water catchment areas and must be conserved and protected if the country is to address water shortage.

Prof Wakhungu added that Kenya has made substantive steps in expanding forests cover from 4.1% to 7.1%. She added that the government’s efforts to conserve the environment will remain on course despite resistance from some communities.
