Women show up in court intoxicated to answer to drunk and disorderly charges

Two women who appeared in court drunk while facing charges of being drunk and disorderly have been sentenced to jail for 14 days or pay a fine of Ksh.500.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Samuel Mutai, the two women – Faith Muthoni and Purity Muthoni – pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The pair was charged that on May 29, 2018, at around 10pm in Embu township, they were found staggering and shouting abusive words to other members of the public due to their state of intoxication.

Faith and Purity told the court that, on the night of their arrest, they had attended a party close to their home and had too much to drink before deciding to walk home.

It was during this walk, they said, that they were arrested by police on patrol.

Upon inquiry on why they appeared in court drunk, the two accused persons told the magistrate that the alcohol they had consumed as at the time of their arrest was still in their systems.

Investigations, however, later revealed that the two had been consuming alcohol stored at the court cells as exhibit while awaiting for the mentioning of their case.
