KTDA to cut costs of energy in tea processing
The Kenya Tea Development Agency is set to cut the huge cost of energy incurred during tea processing once all mini-hydro power projects initiated by the Authority are complete.
This was said by the Authority National Chairman Peter Kanyago when he officiated the ground breaking ceremony of a similar project in Metumi, valued at Sh. 2 billion
The Chairman said that the mini-hydro power plants will bring down total energy cost by 30 percent what is currently being consumed once completed.
Kanyago said that this will translate to saving between Sh. 1 to Sh. 2 in processing of green leave processed hence pushing up the earning by farmers with a similar margin.
The Metumi power plant is set to generate 5.6 megawatts out of which 3.2 megawatts will be used to serve Kiru, Gatunguru, Kanyenya-ini and Githambo tea factories.
