KU student killed in Kisii accident buried in Nyandarua

A sombre mood engulfed Boimann village in Nyandarua West during the funeral service of one of the Kenyatta University students who perished in a grisly road accident along the Kisii-Kilgoris road last week.

19-year-old Mary Wanjiru Maina was laid to rest at her parent’s farm in Gathanji Ward,  in an emotional send-off.

While addressing the mourners, Chairman of the Road Safety Association, Edward KieruGitonga, condoled with the bereaved families and regretted the rising cases of accidents in the country.

He observed that in the recent past, reports have indicated a drastic increase in road carnage especially those involving private vehicles, lorries and motor cyclists saying there was need to address this with an immediate effect.

Gitonga observed that most drivers who cause accidents are either not familiar with the roads they are using, ignorant or in-experienced.

He challenged the government to ensure that such drivers are retrained before being licensed to use the Kenyan roads.

He also challenged drivers to be observant while on the road to avert accidents.

The Roads Safety Chairman noted that automatic vehicles have flooded the market and are very advanced with high speed levels which are tempting to drivers.

The late Mary Wanjiku Maina was a second year student and was pursuing a Bachelors of Arts Degree in English and Literature at the time of her death.

May her soul rest in peace.
