KU students death: Suspect drove 3km with body stuck on car

The family of a Kenyatta University (KU) student who was killed on Mombasa Road in Nairobi is up in arms after the suspect was released on bail.

Maureen Wambui Gachagua, 22, was ran over by a vehicle linked to a Kenya Prisons officer.

The deceased was leaving a party near Next-Gen Mall with her boyfriend when she was hit.

“As they were crossing the road, my sister Maurine was hit by a vehicle and it sped off.

“When I went to the scene and as I was looking around I saw her leg,” the deceased’s brother, Nahashon Wahome, said.

The suspect reportedly drove 3 kilometres with the body of the KU student stuck on the car before dumping it in South C Estate.

The number plate of the car was later found at the scene of the crime.

Police used it to identify the owner of the car leading to the arrest of the person who was behind the wheel.

They later revealed that he had been drunk driving and he was charged with two offences; causing death by dangerous driving and failing to report that he had committed a crime.

The man pleaded guilty to the second charge and was fined Ksh.10,000 for the offence. He would later be released on a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 or a bond of Ksh.1 million.

The family of the KU student however insists the suspect was only charged with a traffic offence.

“We have not managed to see what was written in the OB… The charge of causing accident, running away with the body and concealing it was not part of the document….

“We feel that Justice did not prevail…even if she’s gone…lets try to seek justice with her,” Wahome lamented.

The body of the deceased has been moved to City Mortuary awaiting burial.
