KUPPET Chair slams Matiangi over Regional Education officers plan

Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairman, Omboko Milemba, has slammed Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi over his plan to appoint regional education officers, saying that such an office does not exist in the new constitution.

Speaking during the Migori county KUPPET annual general meeting at Migori TTC, Milemba cautioned the CS against introducing policies that are not included in the new constitution, adding that the union will not accept his proposal.

Milemba also criticized Matiangi over his proposal to reduce the number of Teachers Service Commissioner (TSC) officials from the current number – nine – to three, as well as the plan to scrap off the position for the District Education Board chairperson.

On the other hand, the KUPPET Chair told head teachers and principals to cautious about deliberations made at KEPSHA and KESHA meetings, saying that the union is not happy with some the issues raised – especially when it concerns the welfare of teachers.

Touching on the role that teachers play in the national examination process, Milemba stated that head teachers should not be involved in the collection of exam scripts. He, however, said that they should remain in their institutions during the examination period to execute their managerial duties.

Milemba said that in a meeting with KNUT, the two unions had agreed that teacher must be paid allowances as they will be managing the examination centers.
