KUPPET threatens to sue SRC over job evaluation

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has threatened to go to court to stop the job evaluation exercise by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) that started on Monday.

Chairman Omboko Milemba raised concern over the lack of consultation by the SRC and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over the template to be used in the exercise, adding that there is further concern that it might be a stumbling block to the ongoing salary negotiations.

The chairman maintained that job evaluation must involve workers, in this case the teachers who are represented by the unions.

SRC led by its Chairperson Sarah Serem has however maintained that the exercise will not jeopardise any salary negotiations.

In a statement on Monday, the commission sought to dispel teachers’ fears that the ongoing job evaluation would result in pay cuts saying the review being carried out in the 47 counties was aimed at determining the monetary worth of the 32 job groups in the teaching service.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has opposed the evaluation and asked members to keep off the process.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion described the evaluation process as a ploy to scuttle negotiations for the 50-60 per cent salary rise.
