Kuresoi MCAs call for urgent disarmament

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) drawn from Kuresoi North in Nakuru County have called on the government to carry out a disarmament exercise to address the high rate of small arms proliferation in the area.

The MCAs argue that the high number of crude weapons in the area has contributed to insecurity and banditry attacks.

The three MCAs, Njuguna Gichama (Nyota Ward), Peter Mureu (Sirikwa Ward) and Gware Ng’ang’a (Kamara Ward), alleged that a group of youth has been crisscrossing the constituency armed with bows and arrows, threatening the security of the residents. They further claim that the youth have actively participated in cattle rustling.

“If the government does not take the attacks seriously, then the region might suffer a flare up,” said Mr Ng’ang’a adding that to resolve the livestock theft crisis in Kuresoi, the government should conduct an operation to mop out illegal weapons.

Njuguna Gichama claimed that two people have been killed by the armed assailants in a span of one week, warning that this has instilled fear among the locals.

“Those attacking people may be having other motives other than stealing livestock, a situation that is dangerous especially when the country is gearing up for an election,” he noted.

The MCAs have now asked the peace committees, elders and the community to remain vigilant in order to ensure any acts of violence and insecurity are arrested at early stages.
