Kwale MCAs threaten to impeach Governor Salim Mvurya

Members of Kwale County Assembly have threatened to impeach their Governor, Salim Mvurya, should he fail to release Ksh40 million allocated for bursaries.

Led by Kwale County Speaker Sammy Ruwa, more than five Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) accused Mvurya of running the county single-handedly. They alleged that the Governor was ignoring the residents’ outcry, especially those with underprivileged school-going children.

Ruwa said he has witnessed rowdy demonstrations by county residents because of the delayed release of moneys that the County Assembly passed in its budgetary allocation for bursaries. He asked Mvurya to desist from limiting residents’ constitutional right to hold demonstrations to air their grievances.

“The Governor should deal with the acts of negligence against the people of Kwale County which has led to the current demonstration. He should pull up his socks and change his leadership and release the tax payers’ money,” said Ruwa.

He added that it was wrong for the Governor to continue withholding money allocated to the county’s most needy students. The MCAs then promised to draft an impeachment motion which will be tabled in the County Assembly in the next two weeks.

“We also may be forced to use constitutional avenues because we would rather not have a Governor in office, than have one who does not implement the decisions passed by the Assembly,” warned Ruwa.

This comes shortly after the impeachment of Murang’a Governor, Mwangi Wa Iria, on allegations gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The motion that was tabled by nominated MCA Mary Waithera, and the house resolved to remove Wa Iria from office pursuant to Article 181 (1) (a) (b) (c) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and Section 33 of the County Governments Act 2012.

The Governors fate now lies in the hands of the Senate after the High court upheld the decision that was reached by the MCA.
