Kwale residents want construction of Dongo Kundu bypass stopped

Over 300 families in Tsunza village, Kwale County want the construction of Dongo Kundu bypass phase two and phase three put on hold until there are fully compensated by the government.

President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the construction of Dongo Kundu bypass phase two and three last month at a cost of Ksh.25 billion.

The bypass is a 14-kilometre stretch of road meant to decongest commuters at Likoni channel and boost tourism in south coast.

Led by Kinango Member of Parliament Benjamin Tayari the villagers said they are not against the project but want compensation for the locals affected by the project.

“From the beginning we told the government we are in support of the project because we are aware of the benefits of the road but our main concern is compensation ,” said Tayari.

The legislator noted that the government has already started the construction of the road without even compensating the locals affected by the project.

“We are dissatisfied with the manner the government is undertaking this project you cannot commence a project without putting the interests of people affected by the project, this should stop with immediate effect, added Tayari.
