KWS responds to video of hyena at Langata estate in Nairobi

A hyena was spotted in Nairobi’s Lang’ata estate on Friday evening.

The wild animal was reportedly sighted at around 11pm near Deliverance Church with one Demas Kiprono urging the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to take action.

Kiprono posted a video on social media that showed the animal strolling past several gates.

It would stop for a few minutes, look out into the distance then start walking again.

The person who filmed the video from inside a car followed the animal for about 40 seconds.

There was no one spotted in the area at the time.

KWS responded to Kiprono’s tweet saying: “We took note of this and alerted our team. In case of further wildlife sighting, we request that you call our toll free line, 0800597000 for records and follow up.”

Lang’ata estate borders the Nairobi National Park.

In July this year, a man whose leg was bitten by a hyena had it amputated at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

Nicholas Maingi was reportedly attacked by the beast at around 5am before being taken to hospital later that day at around 3pm.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, he said he was coming back from watching a football match when he was attacked.

And in August last year, a hyena gouged out a woman’s eyes while she answering a call of nature in the bush on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Local media reported that police in Kibwezi, Makueni suspected that the woman had been attacked after she alighted from a truck.

Officers who were on patrol at the Tsavo National Park heard her loud screams and rushed her to the Makindu Hospital.

In case of further wildlife sightings, we request that you call our toll free line, 0800 597000 for records and follow up. Thank you.
