Special team to probe alleged abuse of SGR workers

Labour CS Ukur Yattani has formed a special team to look into the alleged abuse of workers at the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) by their Chinese counterparts.

In a late night circular to newsrooms, CS Yattani further issued a stern warning to those who will be found culpable saying they will be subject to prosecution.

The probe team, that includes senior officials in the ministry, will look into alleged cases of harassment, racism, long working hours, pay disparities, denial of their right of association among others.

“These allegations point to a violation of Labour Laws and offend Article 41 of the Constitution of Kenya,” the statement reads.

CS Yattani further noted that his ministry is charged with the responsibility not only of ensuring that the Labour laws are enforced but also guard and the workers safety and health.

This follows a public uproar over pictures and videos of the alleged mistreatment of Kenyan SGR employees with citizens expressing their displeasure after an expose by a local newspaper.

The CS has ordered the team to report bask to the ministry within seven days.
