Laikipia County to introduce harsh penalties for illicit brewers

Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mariru now says that a Ksh10 million fine will be imposed on anyone found manufacturing illicit liquor in the county.

Mariru said this on Friday while leading Laikipia leaders in a campaign aimed at sensitizing youth on the disadvantages of illicit brew, adding that the regulation is aimed at curbing the vice.

“A new law has been established that will be operational within the Mt. Kenya region which will be able to deal with the menace,” he said.

Laikipia leaders also called for severe punishment for manufacturers of illicit liquors, adding that punitive measures will help stamp out the outlawed trade.

The campaign on illicit brew has heightened in Kenya, attracting even the attention of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Last month, Kenyatta ordered the second phase of the crackdown of illegal alcohol in central Kenya.

The campaign against illicit liquor has also witnessed a couple of crackdowns in various joints across Kenya.

Last week police destroyed 1,000 litres of illicit brew in Narok town during a routine checkup by the county administration officers in London area.

Speaking during the raid, Narok County Commissioner Emanuel Masikonde expressed concern over the re-surfacing of illicit liquor and second generation alcohol dens in the county.
