Laikipia education standards fall due to jiggers infestation

The Ahadi Kenya organization has challenged county governments to join hands with other stakeholders in an effort to eradicate jigger infestation in the country.

According to experts, Laikipia County has witnessed a decline in academic performance due to the jigger menace.

Ahadi Kenya CEO Stanley Kamau and Laikipia County Women Representative Jane Apollos Machira said the county administration must establish proper school infrastructure to ensure they were habitable and sanitary so that children do not get infested with the jiggers.

Kamau noted that the improvement of classes and creating a good environment would help to reverse the declining education performance caused by jigger infestation.

Speaking at Uaso Narok Primary School in Nyahururu Sub County during an anti-jigger campaign, Kamau called for community empowerment saying it was only through such initiatives that Kenyans will be able to deal with the menace.

He challenged the Laikipia County Government to step up measures geared towards giving residents a new lease of life by provision of initiatives aimed at fighting hunger and poverty.

Long suffering jigger victims

The Ahadi Kenya CEO added that county governments need to keenly study the recently launched national policy guidelines on the prevention and control of jigger infestation.

On her part, Laikipia Women Representative Jane Apollos echoed the sentiments saying there was a need to educate Kenyans on how to fight jigger infestation.

She said it was gratifying that Kenyans have finally come together to address the plight of the long-suffering jigger victims, mostly children, the elderly and handicapped.

Apollos added that high poverty levels have also contributed to the menace and called on the government and Members of Parliament to construct classrooms in the most affected areas to help fight the problem.

She noted that jiggers had become a significant health and socio-economic burden and hence called for intensified awareness campaigns against the parasites
