Laikipia North MP Lempurkel arrested for assaulting female MP
Laikipia North MP Matthew Lempurkel is being held at the Kileleshwa Police Station a day after nominated MP Sarah Korere accused him of assault.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Nairobi Regional Coordinator Japheth Koome said Mr Lempurkel was arrested outside Parliament buildings in Nairobi following a report made by Ms Korere on Monday.
According to the police boss, Ms Korere accused Mr Lempurkel of assaulting her outside Harambee House in Nairobi on Monday soon after a meeting with Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.
The two MPs were reportedly engaged in a bitter exchange of words before resorting to a full-blown fistfight over the rising insecurity in their region.
“Laikipia County cannot and will not be led by militia,” a bitter Sarah Korere was quoted as saying during a recent address to members of her constituency.
Ms Korere accused her counterpart Mr Lempurkel of orchestrating the clashes in the region
The MP, on the other hand, accused Ms Korere of being unable to lead the constituency during her tenure.
According to sources, the rivalry between the two escalated a fortnight ago after Ms Korere expressed interest in the post currently held by Mr Lempurkel.
They recorded statements at Parliament Police station and rushed to city hospitals for treatment.
