Laikipia residents threaten to kill jumbos after student attack

Residents of Pesi location in Laikipia County are living in fear after a form two student was attacked and seriously injured by a stray elephant while on his way home Wednesday, September 28.

Peter Macharia, a student at Muruku Secondary School, is recuperating at the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital following the attack.

The attack prompted a protest by the residents who also said that the jumbos have been destroying their crops.

Charles Mwangi, a resident of the area, said they have raised the issue with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the county government but no action has since been taken.

“Our children are at risk of being attacked by these stray animals, they cannot go to school in peace,” said Beatrice Kihara, a head teacher at Kiriko Primary School.

The residents now want the government to move with speed and address the issue failure to which they have threatened to kill the endangered animal.
