Laikipia Women MP welcomes move to slash salaries

A section of leaders have welcomed the proposal by President Uhuru Kenyatta to have the salaries of elected members slashed to reduce the ever ballooning country’s wage bill.

Speaking during the State of the Nation address on Wednesday, March 15, President Kenyatta said that all elected leaders and senior public officials must be ready to take a pay cut after the August 8 General Election.

He added that Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has already drafted proposals that will see the salaries slashed to cut down on the public wage bill which currently stands at 627 billion shillings.

Laikipia County Women Representative, Jane Machira Apollos, says the move was well thought of by the President saying there is need to create a balance between the development projects the country was undertaking and the amount of money the country was receiving.

She said it would be unfortunate for the country to spend more than what it was receiving and hence the move to have the salaries and remuneration of senior government officers reduced should be embraced.

“Cutting our salaries as Members of Parliament and for other people with huge salaries is a good thought from our President because we need to strike a balance between our projects and the money that we receive,” said Ms Apollos.

She added that the government need to beef up security operations in the region to ensure residents live in peace.
