Land fraud investigations unit gets 26 more detectives

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has sanctioned far reaching reforms in the Land Fraud Investigations Unit.

A total of 26 detectives with professional background in land survey, land economics, land physical planning and administration among other relevant fields have been deployed in the unit.

“This move is meant to inject new blood and professionalize the unit, to undertake investigations of land cases that are complex in nature,” the DCI said.

The detectives who were carefully selected and vetted are said to posses the requisite skills relevant to the investigation of frauds related to land.

They are expected to enhance the unit’s capacity to investigate land cases expeditiously and advise on the appropriate legal action to be taken.

The DCI said the reforms have been made ahead of the roll out of the new lands digital migration program, in conformity with the lands Registration Act, 2012.

Two days ago, Lands CS Farida Karoney met with the EU Delegation for a presentation of the National Land Information Management System (NLIMS).

CS Karoney explained that the process to fully digitise the land registry in Nairobi is currently on course, with plans to extend the digitisation process to the rest of the country by 2022.

EU Ambassador Simon Mordue noted that digitalisation of land registries offers improved land governance and security of tenure which are attractive for both local citizens and foreign investors.

“With many of our development cooperation programmes focused on Agriculture, this is a very welcome development. I congratulate the Ministry of Lands and CS Karoney for all the work that has gone in to realise this process,” he said.

The EU has been supporting the Land Governance programme via FAO with Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, National Lands Commission and nine county Governments since 2016.

One of the key activities has been the development of the NLIMS, which is a digitisation of land records.

Present at the event was also the FAO Country Representative Carla Mucavi.
