Landlord removes roof, door in rent arrears row with tenant

A family in Kiambiriria village in Laikipia have been left at the mercy of the rains after their landlord removed part of their roof and door over unpaid rent.

The middle-aged tenant and a mother of two says she was away during the incident and was informed by her kids.

Since it was raining, she asked her kids to sleep at her neighbors house as her house was now too cold.

“He removed the door and the room in my bedroom, to make sure I would not sleep at night, most of my things have been destroyed by the rain water,” she told Inooro TV.

The mother of two only identified as Wa-kamam says she got home around 10pm after the car she was travelling in got stuck in mud.

On getting to her house, she realised that her house was empty and later learnt that the landlord had taken her household items to offset the rent arrears.

After checking on her kids, the mother of two then went back to the empty house where she slept until morning.

The matter is currently under police investigation.

President Uhuru recently urged landlords to ease the burden for their tenants who are struggling on account of the Covid-19 crisis.

“If someone has for years been your tenant and has never failed to pay rent it’s only logical that you reciprocate at this difficult time. This is a time for compassion and understanding,” he said.

At the same time, he commended landlords who had waived or reduced rent to accommodate tenants during the pandemic.
