Lari parents want bursary funds diverted to free secondary education

Parents in Lari, Kiambu County, are now asking the national government to stop the giving bursary funds and redirect the same monies to provision of free secondary school education.

According to the parents, most politicians, who are used by the government to issue bursaries to needy learners at grass root level, have used that opportunity to grant the fund to their close allies for political mileage

The area Member of Parliament, Joseph Mburu Kahangara, was, however, quick to refute the parents’ idea saying that the kitty should be retained as all needy students who apply are allocated some amount.

The parents expressed their dissatisfaction over the fund saying: “The money we are given is little that it cannot even carter for a whole year.”

“The bursary board should also re-arrange so that the bursary is given at once such that parents will not be required to fill forms every three months,” a parent from Soko Mjinga and identified only as Mr Nyoro, opined.

Reports indicate that since the start of the year, a total of Ksh 17 million has been disbursed to 6,000 students in Lari Constituency with students in colleges and boarding schools getting the bigger allocation.
