Laura Akunga owes me over Ksh17m, claims Sriram Bharatam

Laura Akunga-Muruthi has made national headlines again, and this time it is not for an expensive gift. The 28-year-old businesswoman has been sued by an Asian man, Sriram Bharatam for a sum exceeding Ksh17 million.

In a case filed at the Milimani Commercial courts on the 31st of March this year, Bharatam has accused Laura Akunga of refusing to pay back moneys that he loaned her.

According to court papers by Sriram, Akunga allegedly experienced financial difficulties in January 2013, after Family Bank reportedly moved to recover a loan of Ksh40 million which she had guaranteed somebody. When the individual defaulted, Sriram claims he lent her 4.9 million as she had only 48 hours to clear the Ksh40 million loan.

Laura allegedly came back to him in April asking him to bail out her business which was in financial trouble. In the meeting she presented a detailed plan for a new business that she intended to start and Sriram gave her some more money.

In August, Laura had allegedly failed to pay one of her suppliers Granada Trading which had threatened to report her to the police if she did not settle the amount owed. Sriram claims that he came to her rescue once again by sending her Ksh7.35 million through a bank transfer which she used to settle the debt. He further claims Laura owes his company 4.2 million besides the 17.6 million.

Sriram claims Laura had indicated to him that her company, Benchmark Solutions, makes around Ksh80 to Ksh90 million in revenue but did not have financial records to prove her statement. The businessman claims that he later found out that the company only makes between 6 and 8 million shillings in revenue.

Sriram revealed that Laura has refused to speak to him since October, and his attempts to send email messages to her have proven futile.
