Law society appoints members to mediate doctors strike

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Isaac Okero, has nominated LSK members John Morris Ohaga and Njeri Kariuki as the temporary mediators to in the mediating panel set to find a solution to the ongoing doctors’ strike.

The LSK members will join Commissioner and Chair of Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNHCR) and a well trained mediator, Kagwiria Mbogori, and Mr. James Mang’erere, who is renowned for his expertise as a mediation trainer for KNCHR in trying to find a solution to the strike that has lasted for over 7o days.

The panel, which will co-chaired by Ms Mbogori and Mr Ohaga, immediately began its preparations after the announcement was made, and will be required to give further communication about the panel’s decisions after every session.

The panel is set to bring on the table the doctors and the government officials after the two factions failed to reach a deal to end the stalemate that has led to a health crisis in all public hospitals.

The standoff between the two groups on Monday, February 13 saw doctors sent to jail for contempt of court after failing to call off the strike but were quickly released on Wednesday by the Court of Appeal.

Okero also appreciated efforts by lawyers Philip Murgor, Geoffrey Orao Obura, Michael Muchemi and James Orengo who acted swiftly without charges in representing LSK  and the rest of the team before the Court of Appeal, while at the same time recognizing devoted efforts by all parties and counsel as they sought to resolve the dispute as quick as possible.
