Law Society of Kenya to sue Uganda over Bobi Wine detention

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has said it will sue the Ugandan government at the East African Court of Justice for human rights violation in the detention of Bobi Wine.

“We call upon the governments of East African states, including Kenya, to apply pressure on Uganda to comply with these demands and respect international human rights instruments,” LSK Nairobi Chairman Charles Kanjama said.

Uganda has attracted international condemnation over the arrest and alleged torture of opposition politicians critical of President Yoweri Museveni’s administration.

In a Press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, LSK demanded that Uganda ” immediately and unconditionally” release musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly by his stage name Bobi Wine, from military detention.

“We are also working with the East Africa Law Society, to also seek to engage in further legal action both in the courts in Uganda and East Africa Court of Justice and any other court, so that the truth of what has happened in Uganda can come to light and to show solidarity with people of Uganda,” Kanjama added.

Chaotic protests have rocked Uganda since last week when opposition politicians including Bobi Wine were arrested after an incident where President Museveni’s motorcade was pelted with stones.

Police and the military in Uganda used live ammunition and teargas to disperse protesters in Kampala and other areas.

Meanwhile, LSK has called on its members to engage in a week long red ribbon campaign in solidarity with Ugandans, and take part in a peaceful protest on Thursday to push for justice.

“We also call on the Government of Uganda to ensure that Hon. Kyagulanyi receives adequate medical treatment as required by his state of health, by a doctor of the family’s choosing,” the LSK Chairman added.

Meanwhile, a section of Kenyan MP have also criticized President Museveni over the Bobi Wine saga.

“As youths we must stand up to resist injustice. We will stand behind Bobbi and demand for justice,” Langata MP Nixon Korir said.

His Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino said the unlawful arrest of must be condemned.
