Lawyer Charles Kanjama files case challenging verification of BBI signatures

Lawyer Charles Kanjama has filed a case at the Milimani Law Courts challenging the signatures that were put in support of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum.

Kanjama says the process given by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for voters to confirm their details that included accessing files through links was unreasonable for several reasons.

He argues that there was no voter education on how to carry out the process of confirming their details, adding that the process was largely inadequate and inaccessible to the public.

“A voter has to write a letter if they wish to communicate an objection,” read court papers.

He is now asking the court to grant orders to quash the decision by IEBC that finalized the verification of the signature exercise.

High Court Judge Jairus Ngaah did not issue any orders sought but instead directed that the case be served upon the respondents in the case who include IEBC and the Attorney General.

Parties will highlight their submissions through video link on March 8, 2021.

Already, the BBI Bill is headed to the National Assembly and the Senate after it crossed the 24 counties mark required by the constitution.
