Leaders call on govt to step up fight against corruption

Leaders from the North Rift region have called on the government to step up in its efforts in the fight against corruption in the country.

The leaders regretted that the recent corruption scandal facing Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi could greatly affect credibility of the judicial system if he is found guilty.

Speaking at a secondary school in Kapenguria Constituency, Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto and West Pokot Women’s representative Regina Nyeris called on sobriety in the fight against corruption.

The leaders noted that Kenyans have lost faith in the judicial system since the corruption allegations were levelled against Justice Tunoi and called on the government to restore the court’s credibility.

Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the corruption scandals facing the highest court in the land would take Kenya to the dark days where justice was a luxury that only the rich could afford.

“It took us a lot of time to restore credibility in our courts and we should not allow a few individuals to destroy the judiciary,” he said.

“We must jealously guard the confidence Kenyans have in our judiciary system and the Supreme Court without doubt must be beyond reproach,” he added.

The leaders said the tribunal should comprehensively deal with the matter at hand to ensure confidence in key government organs.

Kapenguria MP Samuel Muroto called on those implicated in various corruption scandals in the country to step aside to allow uninterrupted investigations.

“We cannot allow a few individuals to kill the public confidence in our government. We have come a long way in bringing back sanity to public institutions,” he said.

West Pokot Women’s representative Regina Nyeris added that leaders should stop pointing fingers and instead take responsibility for the problems facing the nation.

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin on his part cautioned leaders from early campaigns since it would distract the country’s development agenda.

“We have seen many politicians moving around witch-hunting governors in the name of oversight. This should be condemned to allow leaders to undertake their mandate,” he said.

The leaders were speaking during the commissioning of a water project at the secondary school.
