Leaders differ over relocation of Laikipia county headquaters

Leaders and residents of Laikipia County have taken different stands over the planned relocation of the county headquarters from Nanyuki to Rumuruti.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Laikipia East lawmaker Anthony Mutahi said he supported the move, insisting that a centralised system will be more pro-active as his constituents will be able to access services from a central point, noting that the current headquarters, Nanyuki Town, is on the border.

Mutahi also claimed that the move would not affect local tourism in Nanyuki, adding that the town is a destination known by both local and foreign tourists.

Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mariru expressed similar sentiments saying that earlier the county assembly had passed a Bill to relocate the headquarters.

In addition, Mariru said that once the relocation is complete, the new assembly would be used by Center for Parliamentary Studies to train MCA’s from other counties as they are in talks with CPS to finalize the initiative.

On the other hand, TNA chairman in Laikipia County, Christopher Mathu, said the public was not involved in the planned relocation, adding that the exercise would be a wastage of public resources.
